Privatization was a sad aspect of Slovak economic growth, said President Ivan Gasparovic in his speech at an economic forum in Kishinev, which he opened along with his Moldovan counterpart Vladimir Voronin. He added that privatization in Slovakia was often carried out in favor of the state and not in favor of citizens. Speaking about dynamics of Slovakia' economic growth, he labeled the year of 2006 to be record breaking. He reminded that such success could be ascribed also to reforms carried out by the previous conservative-liberal government, which current government preserves and corrects where necessary.
Slovakia closely watches political and economic development in Moldova, which did not belong to Slovakia's significant business partners in the past. However, by EU entry of Slovakia and Romania, as Moldova's neighbors, the situation starts to change.
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin drew attention in his speech to new economic measures in his country. As of January 1, 2008, it will be possible for both state-run and private companies to ask for debt cancellation. If a company makes profit from investments into development projects, no tax on profit is paid. Otherwise, the tax rate is 15 percent.
